Walmart will close two stores in California and one in Maryland, the retailer confirmed Tuesday.
The move brings Walmart to six confirmed store closings so far this year.
The three closures come on the heels of a store closing in Ohio and a pair of store closures in the San Diego metro area that Walmart said did not meet financial performance expectations, a Walmart spokeswoman said.
“We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at these locations,” said Walmart spokeswoman Alicia Anger. “We look forward to continuing to serve them at many other locations across their specific regions, on walmart.com and through delivery to their home or business.”
The company said all affected workers are eligible for transfer to a different store.
The retailer previously announced plans to open or begin construction on 14 new locations this year. In October, Walmart said it planned to spend $9 billion to upgrade and modernize 1,400 stores.
The company additionally said in January it will build or remodel over 150 stores in the next five years, plus it plans remodels on 650 locations this year, alone.
Walmart has over 4,600 retail locations in the U.S., according to the company’s website. It’s a number that includes 3,560 supercenters, 360 discount stores, and some 700 neighborhood markets and small format stores. The retailer additionally has about 600 Sam’s Club warehouses.
