WESTBURY, N.Y — Workers at Stop & Shop stores said Tuesday they would not walk off the job this week, adhering to a federal mediator’s request for a “cooling off period” in negotiations between the union representing workers and Stop & Shop management.
More than 6,000 workers at Stop & Shop stores in the metropolitan New York area are currently without a contract as negotiation for a deal replacing the one that expired earlier this year continue, said United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1500 here. Workers met earlier this week to prepare for a possible strike or walkout, the union said. The union said Stop & Shop management has also agreed not to lock out employees through the weekend.
"Consumers, workers and dozens of communities throughout the area that had been holding their breath waiting to see if their Thanksgiving shopping plans would have to be diverted to other supermarkets can now exhale," Anthony Speelman, secretary-treasurer of UFCW Local 1500, said in a statement. "There will be no work stoppages called by either UFCW Local 1500 or Stop and Shop management over the Thanksgiving weekend.”
