Some Wegmans shoppers double-charged for orders

Incident happened in-store and online, and grocer is working to get the issue resolved

Wegmans is still working with its payment card processor to reverse double charges that some shoppers incurred last week, reports Rochester, N.Y.’s WHEC News 10.

Those who used debit and credit cards to pay for groceries at Wegmans stores or online were charged twice. The grocer said shoppers who used debit cards that required pin entry were not impacted, but those who used debit cards and chose credit were hit with the double transaction.

The reason for the error was unknown, according to Wegmans.

Wegmans has recently introduced tappable credit payments at checkout, and some shoppers told News 10 that they believe that is how they received the two charges at once.

“We recently identified an issue with credit card transactions processed on Aug. 16 for both in-store and online orders. Some credit card transactions were inadvertently charged twice for their order, however, EBT and debit card transactions were not affected unless they were processed as credit at the customer's request,” Wegmans said in an email statement to Supermarket News

“We are working with our processor to reverse the charges. Customers who have not already seen the charges reversed should see the duplicate changes refunded in the upcoming days.”

Wegmans, however, did not say whether any fees also will be covered.
