Target, Walmart, Albertsons tops in ecommerce and grocery pick-up: report

Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh also score well among shoppers

When it comes to streamlining the ordering and fulfillment process, whether online or for pick-up, grocers like Target, Walmart, and Albertsons are considered top performers.

Marketing research and polling company Ipsos recently released a study on “buy online, pick-up in store” and ecommerce trends across the grocery industry and took a look at 17 grocers.

Target, Walmart, and Albertsons were listed at the top and each one saw marked improvement year over year, according to Ipsos.

Respondents voted Whole Foods Market as the best in communication when it comes to delivery (83% very satisfied). Albertsons was the brand shoppers said they were most likely to buy from again (61% extremely likely to use again) with delivery.

In the curbside pickup category, Albertsons was the top grocer (97% very satisfied) and Amazon Fresh was the one that had the most return shoppers (76% extremely likely to use again).

The Ipsos report draws upon a fall 2023 survey of 1,200 Americans, a series of “mystery” shopping experiences, and an analysis and ranking of key purchase consideration drivers across online, buy online, pick-up in store, and curbside pick-up shopping journeys.

“Big-box retailers who sell groceries are making significant ecommerce and infrastructure investments to streamline the ordering and fulfillment processes, from signage and parking to staffing,” Silvana Daehn, vice president, Ipsos’ Channel Performance practice, said. “Their goal is to make the buying of groceries and other household items a single, seamless transaction. Pure-play grocers need to invest to keep up.”
